Crocodile

Crocodiles are large, air-breathing reptiles and apex predators that primarily inhabit tropical and subtropical regions, living in rivers, lakes, wetlands, and sometimes saltwater environments.

General Characteristics

• Physical features: They have thick, armored skin with tough scales and a powerful, elongated tail used for swimming.
• Habitat & behavior: They are semi-aquatic animals. They spend a lot of time in the water but frequently come ashore to bask in the sun to regulate their body temperature.
• Diet & hunting: As carnivorous predators, they feed on fish, birds, and various mammals, often using stealth to ambush their prey at the water's edge.
• Famous species: Notable types include the Saltwater crocodile (the largest living reptile) and the Nile crocodile (known for its aggressive nature).

In Cambodia, the Siamese crocodile (locally known as the mountain crocodile) is a critically endangered freshwater species. While rare globally, vital conservation efforts are actively underway to protect their remaining populations in the Cardamom Mountains.
