Fishing Cat

The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild feline native to South and Southeast Asia. Unlike most domestic and wild cats that avoid water, this unique predator has evolved specifically to hunt in aquatic environments like swamps, mangroves, and marshlands.

Physical Characteristics & Unique Adaptations

Fishing cats are built specifically to rule the wetlands:

• Physical Build: They are stocky and powerful, weighing anywhere from 5 to 17 kg (11 to 37 lbs), making them the largest members of their genus (Prionailurus).
• Waterproof Coat: They possess a dense, double-layered coat of olive-grey fur patterned with black spots and stripes. The short undercoat acts as a barrier, keeping their skin completely dry while swimming.
• Built-in "Plugs": Their ears are small and rounded. When diving underwater, they can fold them down flat to prevent water from entering.
• Webbed Paws & Short Tail: Their front toes feature partial webbing to help propel them through the water. Their tail is unusually short and stubby, acting as a rudder rather than a balancing tool.

Diet and Elusive Hunting Tactics

While they are generalist carnivores that will eat birds, small rodents, and frogs, fish make up roughly 70% of their diet.

They have two main ways of catching a meal. They may wade in shallow water and use their paws to scoop fish out like a bear. Alternatively, they will sit patiently at the edge of deep water, gently tapping the surface with their paws to mimic insect movement and lure fish. Once a fish swims close enough, the cat dives face-first into the water to ambush its prey.

Habitat and Conservation Status

Fishing cats are highly dependent on healthy wetlands. Their distribution is fragmented across countries like northern India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Cambodia. In Cambodia, where they are known locally as Kla Trey ("Tiger fish"), important populations have been recorded via camera traps in areas like the Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary.
