Main Types of Domestic Buffalo

Domestic water buffaloes are generally divided into two main categories:

• Swamp Buffalo: This is the most common type found in Cambodia and across Southeast Asia. They have stocky bodies, grey skin, and horns that sweep backward. They are primarily used for draft power in agriculture, such as plowing rice fields and pulling carts.
• River Buffalo: Mostly found in India and further west. They have deep black skin, tightly curled horns, and are raised primarily for milk production due to the high fat content of their milk.

Biological Characteristics and Behavior

• Wallowing in Water and Mud: Because water buffaloes have very few sweat glands, they do not tolerate high heat well. To stay cool during hot days and protect their skin from biting insects, they spend a lot of time submerged in water or mud.
• Diet: They are herbivores that mainly graze on grass, especially the lush vegetation found in wetlands and aquatic plants.
• Social Structure: Females and their calves live in herds of 10 to 30 animals led by an experienced dominant female. Adult males usually live alone or in small bachelor groups, only joining the herds to mate.
