Light yellow beak, yellow legs and rounded tail

The brahminy kite (Haliastur indus), also known as the red-backed sea-eagle in Australia, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae that is easily recognized by its striking chestnut-brown body and contrasting white head and breast.

Key Facts

Scientific Name: Haliastur indus

Size: Length of 44–52 cm; wingspan of 110–125 cm

Habitat: Coastal areas, mangroves, estuaries, and wetlands

Diet: Opportunistic scavenger (fish, carrion, insects, and refuse)

Conservation Status:Least Concern

Physical Appearance and Identification

  • Adults: Unmistakable plumage featuring a pure white head and chest that contrasts sharply with a rich, brick-red or chestnut body and wings. They have a lemon-yellow bill, yellow legs, and a rounded tail (unlike the forked tails of other kite species).
  • Juveniles: Uniformly darker brownish-black with paler heads and distinct white patches visible under their wings during flight.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Geographic Range: Found widely across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia (including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand), New Guinea, and northern/eastern coastal Australia.
  • Preferred Environment: Mostly restricted to coastal mangroves, mudflats, and river estuaries, though they frequently venture inland along major waterways, lakes, and even urban harbors or fish farms.

Behavior and Diet

  • Scavenging: Primarily opportunistic feeders that swoop low over water to snatch dead fish, floating refuse, or small carrion from the surface.
  • Kleptoparasitism: Known to aggressively harry and steal food mid-air from other fishing birds like gulls and ospreys.
  • Vocalization: Emits a distinctive, drawn-out nasal, plaintive wail or mewing scream often described as "kyeeerrh" or "pee-ah-ah-ah".

Cultural Significance

  • In Hindu tradition, the brahminy kite is considered sacred and serves as the earthly representation of Garuda, the divine king of birds and mount of Lord Vishnu.
  • It is also recognized as the official fauna symbol or national bird in places like Indonesia and the Malaysian state of Sabah.
