Black Eagle

The Black Eagle is a specialized, elegant raptor native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South and Southeast Asia.

• Physical Characteristics: They are large but relatively lightweight, reaching a length of 75 cm with a wingspan of 148 to 182 cm. Adults possess completely jet-black plumage, contrasted by a bright yellow cere (bill base) and yellow feet.
• Distinctive Silhouette: In flight, they hold their long wings in a shallow "V" shape. Their primary wing feathers feature unique, deeply splayed "fingers" that allow them to fly at exceptionally slow speeds right over the forest canopy.
• Diet & Unique Hunting Habits: Unlike many other apex raptors, they are prolific nest predators. They use their wide bill gape and specialized curved claws to snatch bird eggs and nestlings straight out of tree branches. They are famously known to carry away entire bird nests to a feeding perch. They also eat bats, squirrels, and small monkeys.
• Habitat: They strictly inhabit dense, lowland evergreen and mountainous forests up to 3,300 meters above sea level.
